Aquarium Care

Tank Setup
Minimum Size 30 gallons larger is better if you want multiple fish.
Aquascaping Use plenty of live rock caves and hiding places.
Lighting Moderate avoid harsh direct lighting.
Water Flow Moderate similar to reef slopes.
Water Parameters
Temperature 72–78°F 22–25°C
pH 8.1–8.4
Salinity 1.020–1.025
Nitrates Keep under 20 ppm
Stable clean water is essential for this species.
Diet
In nature Blackcap Basslets feed on zooplankton and tiny crustaceans. In aquariums they readily accept a variety of foods including
Frozen mysis shrimp
Enriched brine shrimp
Chopped seafood
High-quality marine pellets
Copepods great for young fish
Feed once or twice daily in small portions. A varied diet helps maintain their vibrant colors.
Behavior & Compatibility
Blackcap Basslets are territorial and will defend their chosen cave from intruders. They’re generally peaceful with other reef-safe fish but can be aggressive toward similar-looking species.
Good Tankmates
Gobies
Blennies
Small wrasses
Tangs (in larger tanks)
Invertebrates (shrimp, snails, crabs)
Avoid
Other Blackcap Basslets (unless in a very large tank)
Aggressive fish like large angelfish or triggers
Breeding
Captive breeding of Blackcap Basslets is rare but possible. They are cave spawners with the male guarding eggs until they hatch. Rearing larvae requires live foods rotifers copepods and specialized rearing tanks. Because of the difficulty most specimens in the hobby are wild-caught.
Common Issues
Shyness Hiding Often due to lack of caves or too much lighting.
Aggression Happens in tanks that are too small or with similar fish.
Feeding Problems Newly introduced fish may refuse food offer live brine or copepods to start.
